How VR CAVE and powerwall setups differ from headset VR, why precise optical 6DOF tracking matters — and how DTRACK supports large-scale multi-user installations.
Why CAVE and powerwall differ from headset VR
In a VR CAVE or at a powerwall, several people share a large tracking volume at the same time. Unlike headset-only VR, the focus is on collaborative engineering, design reviews, and simulation — often with real vehicle or product models in the room. Whenever real objects are in the room, long-term coordinate stability is crucial: the relative positions of real objects and virtual content must not only remain stable during a single VR session. Equally important, when you start the system on Monday morning, the coordinate system of the virtual environment must still be the same as last week before you shut it down.
This requires precise optical 6DOF tracking: position and orientation of head-mounted displays, tools, and objects must remain stable and synchronized over the long term — across many square metres and often with multiple users. While the basic requirement of headset-only VR is mostly smoothness of rotational data, long-term stability of room coordinates is usually crucial for working in CAVEs or at powerwalls, especially in mixed-reality applications. Tracking requirements therefore differ markedly between CAVE/powerwall setups and headset-only VR.
Marker-based tracking with DTRACK
